YOUR RIGHTS
Before you are searched the Police should tell you:

  • To wait to be searched.
  • The law and your rights.
  • Their name/station/rank.
  • Why they chose you.
  • What they are looking for.

A written record of the search must be given to you.

You can only be stopped and searched if the Police have good reason to suspect that you are carrying Drugs, Weapons, Stolen Property or Items which could be used to commit:

  • Any Crime
  • Acts of Terrorism
  • Cause Criminal Damage

You should not be stopped or searched as a result of the following: age, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, faith, looks, dress code, language you speak or you have committed a crime in the past.
